How To Make Lipgloss

You Might Know By Now…We Love Lipgloss!

People who want to learn how to make lipgloss at home usually fall into two categories. It could be that you just want a fun new hobby. And, if so, making your own lipgloss could be an extremely rewarding DIY project.

It’s a bit like learning how to cook a satisfying new meal, because you, your friends, and your family will get to experience the results.

On the other hand, you might be thinking about starting your own private label lipgloss brand and are hoping that making it yourself at home will be the cheapest option.

Either way, I took a close look at the top 5 search results for “How to Make Lipgloss,” and I noticed both some pros and some cons to making your own lipgloss at home.

Let’s see how these pros and cons impact both the hobbyist and the entrepreneur by examining the various steps to making lipgloss at home. Not all 5 sources have the same number of steps, but they all have similarities we can draw upon.

For our purposes, I have condensed it all into 3 not-so-easy steps.

Step 1: The Melting Process

All 5 of my sources suggest using beeswax as the base, but they do not all agree on how to melt it or when to add other ingredients. Some say to place it in a glass container (such as a measuring cup) and heat it slowly in the microwave, stirring it frequently.

Others advise placing the beeswax in a mason jar and setting it upright in a pot of hot water (at about medium heat), making sure that no water enters the jar.

Next, most sources then say to add whatever oils you will be using. Some suggest adding these oils before or during the melting process, while others say to add it directly after. Regardless of when you add them, your choices of oils include jojoba, coconut (the most popular choice), olive, avocado, sweet almond, and even – in one case – castor.

Most sources also advised adding vitamin E, which you can get from capsules, as well as either cocoa butter or shea butter for additional softness.

Once the melting process is complete, you will have a lipgloss base, which will usually be clear in appearance.

Want to skip the mess of melting? You can also purchase a pre-made lipgloss base and oils from TKB Trading or similar companies. But, then again, that might feel like cheating for the hobbyist. It would be a bit like buying a cake mix instead of starting from scratch.

Step 2: Customizing

The next question you should ask yourself is, “Do I want to add flavor and color when making lipgloss at home?” According to my 5 sources, there are a variety of ways to do this.

For flavor, one source suggests using other essential oils, such as lemon, grapefruit, orange, eucalyptus, or peppermint. Another adds lavender to that list, and one advises that – whatever you do decide upon – you should be careful to know if any of these new ingredients will have a chemical reaction when added together.

Yikes! You might want to research that before experimenting.

Adding color can be a bit trickier and possibly more expensive. Among the choices listed in my sources, the most affordable are a.) rose red mica powder, which deepens in shade as you add more

b.) beet root powder

c.) food coloring

Oddly enough, 2 sources suggest you use melted lipstick for color, but that would drive the cost up very quickly, especially for larger batches. Plus, if you are hoping to sell your DIY lipgloss, using another brand’s lipstick as your color base might cause you legal problems in the long run.

Step 3: The Pour

By far the messiest of our 3 steps, putting your finished product into containers might be the biggest headache of all. For this reason, most of my sources suggest using jars instead of tubes. But, even then, you are going to need either a very steady hand or a large plastic syringe. You can buy such syringes at TKD Trading, as well as jars and tubes.

However, keep in mind that – if you do plan on selling your DIY lipgloss – you will also want to add your logo and other labeling materials. So, for the entrepreneur, this is far from being the final step.

Not to mention, creating and applying your own labeling may result in a product that looks unprofessional, even if you have managed to make the best homemade lipgloss ever created. For better or worse, appearance is everything.

The Bottom Line

Much like with home cooking, making your own lipgloss might make a great hobby that will thrill your friends and family, but turning it into a profitable business will likely prove beyond your means. When you begin to add up the cost of the ingredients + the time it takes to make lipgloss (and to clean up the mess left behind), you will probably be looking for other options.

Luckily, those other options are not only easier and less time consuming – they also come with a ton of other benefits for both you and your customers.
