Reviewing Cosmetics Labs in California

Cosmetics and California

Who doesn’t love California? The celebrities, warm sun, and sandy beaches are hard to compete with. Maybe that’s why you’re searching for a cosmetics lab in California. It’s where all the big dreams come true.

Sure, Hollywood is in California, but the expenses are hefty, avocado toast is kind of soggy, and their environmental factors are less than savory. (Sidenote: consider donating to the California Wildfire Relief Fund.)

What if I told you that location isn’t the most important factor when choosing a cosmetics lab? Believe it or not, you can still achieve that California dream without the taste of sand in your mouth.

This article is a recap of our last article about finding the perfect cosmetics lab (“Perfect Cosmetics Labs in Texas (and Other Places)”). There, I discussed the four things you need to look for when searching for the perfect cosmetics lab for you. There’s even a cool infographic you can download.

Let’s head West and look at a few cosmetics labs in California!

Review of Cosmetics Labs in California

  1. Malibu Labs (Los Angeles, California)

Although their website is attractive, Malibu Labs offers little information. They list skincare, body, and hair care as their specialties as well as CBD products. However, their mediums are unknown. They also do not offer private labeling but have over 1000 formulas for customers to choose from.

While there’s not too much on their turnkey services, it feels like Malibu Labs specializes more in the growth of the brand. According to their site, they “only create brands for serious companies.” These services include help from their partner contract manufacturer and guidance with marketing, website design, and retail service, either in-store or online.

Capabilities

  • Skincare, Body care, hair care

  • CBD products

Personal Fit

  • Serious companies

  • Organic, natural beauty

Pros: assistance from formulation to retail

Cons: no private labeling, lack of information on the website, no blog

2. Libby Laboratories (Berkeley, California)

Similar to Malibu Labs, Libby Laboratories helps design, manufacture, and package your products. This company offers both custom formulations and private labeling in skincare, haircare, body care, and even pet care!

They encourage you to fill out a quick start form with many detailed questions for you to answer. The look of their site is a little messy and hard to manage, but it’s better to have more information than none. They also provide all of their pricing on the site so that you can get an idea of how they fit into your budget.

Capabilities

  • Skincare, Body Care, Haircare, Pet Care

  • Hand sanitizer, cream, moisturizer, oil, cleanser, gel, scrub, etc.

  • Minimum Order Quantity: 2 cases

Personal Fit

  • Entrepreneurs and Larger companies

Pros: pricing available on-site, custom and private label

Cons: inactive blog, messy website

3. KTO (Westlake Village, California)

First impressions? This site is fun. The logo, the colors, the font are all very exciting if a little difficult to read. KTO specializes in organic and natural color cosmetics and skincare. Their owner is a stage III Thyroid Cancer Survivor who created a strict KTO Compliance for their products.

According to the site, it ensures that none of their products use “known cancer causing or endocrine disrupting ingredients, or use any banned ingredient from any country in the world.” After filling out a contact form, KTO sends an automatic email explaining their policies and procedures. Once you read that, you can reply to the email directly regarding the details of your situation.

Capabilities

  • Color Cosmetics, Skincare

  • Moisturizers, creams, scrubs, lip products, foundations, deodorant, etc.

  • Minimum Order Quantities: 2000-3000 depending on the formula

Personal Fit

  • Natural, organic companies

Pros: KTO compliance

Cons: limited site, no blog

Genie Supply vs. Cosmetics Labs in California

As you can see from our list of cosmetics labs in California, only one offered color cosmetics and skincare. It’s rare for a company to do both, but Genie Supply fits the bill! We have gels, creams, liquids, and many more mediums that will pique your interest.

We also offer silkscreen printing services!

Genie Supply is best for budding entrepreneurs and people new to the business side of cosmetology. How can you believe us? We have an active blog! It’s not full of information that doesn’t make sense with a super formal tone.

We’re human just like you, and we don’t speak robot. Our blog tries to answer all the possible questions you may have. Whether it’s about how to start a lipgloss line or understanding cosmetic testing, we have your back!

Got $2000 - $3000? That’s just enough to get started with private labeling! It sounds like a lot, but I promise it’s a good deal. It’s just above $2000 to start with 500 pieces of most lip products (see selection and samples here!)

Or, if you’re looking to custom formulate, you can start with as little as $1000 or as much as $50,000. The price depends on the product you’re looking to make as well as the difficulty.

For example, a face oil will start around $1000 while mascara will start from $5000. For more information on estimates and the custom formulation side of Genie Supply, read our “Custom Formulate in 4 Steps or Less” article, or read our deep dive into custom formulating with Genie Supply here.

Instead of intense Californian heat, Genie Supply is centered in cozy Bedford, Indiana. No, we don’t have the ocean view, but we have plenty of lush trees. Remember, location isn’t the most important when looking at cosmetics labs. Our clients range from local to all over the country!
