Sea Algae in Skin Care: Worth the Hype?

There has been a lot of hype about using sea algae in skin care products over the last few years, but what are the real benefits of sea algae? To find out, I took a deep “dive” (get it?) into the skin care ocean and discovered a not-so-surprising truth: sea algae helps keep skin hydrated.

But you might still be wondering how it helps with hydration, what other benefits sea algae might contain, or which of your private label skin care customers it could help the most.

Never fear! In this blog, I will share all my findings with you and tell you how you can add at least one Genie Supply item to your private label skin care line that includes this miraculous ingredient.

Let’s dive in:

NOTHING IS MORE “GREEN & CLEAN” THAN SEA ALGAE

We think that makes it a perfect fit for our new Green + Clean philosophy, don’t you?

Scientists estimate there are over 70,000 types of algae in our oceans. But only a few are used in skin care. Because they grow in sea water, they absorb a lot of important minerals and vitamins from their environment. One source says sea algae retains many “vitamins, minerals, amino acids, proteins, and lipids.”

According to another source I found, some of those minerals and vitamins include:

  • Copper

  • Iodine

  • Iron

  • Magnesium

  • Phosphorus

  • Potassium

  • Zinc

  • Vitamin A

  • Vitamin B

  • Vitamin C

  • Vitamin D

  • Vitamin E

  • Vitamin K

HYDRATION = ANTI-AGING POWER

One study (conducted in a lab) found that the hydrating properties of sea algae in skin care would likely benefit older people the most. Why?

1. Because sea algae has a natural ability to protect itself from the harmful effects of UV light.

2. Because sea algae also has antioxidants. In fact, it has even been shown to improve skin elasticity and diminish crow’s feet.

And that’s not all. Although more studies need to be conducted, it could even protect the skin from certain cancers. No wonder skin care enthusiasts have been so busy praising sea algae!

BUT SEA ALGAE ISN’T JUST FOR MATURE CUSTOMERS

In fact, because it is such a great hydrator, sea algae is the perfect ingredient for skin care products aimed at reducing the impact of cold and dry weather conditions. Umm, winter just called to remind everyone it is not even half over (sorry! Don’t shoot the messenger). With February right around the bend, there is no better time to add a skin care product with sea algae to your private label line.

WHO SHOULD AVOID SEA ALGAE?

Overall, sea algae is not known to cause any adverse effects, but – like so many other ingredients – there is a very small population of people who might be sensitive to it. Some dermatologists recommend testing it on the skin first to ensure you are not one of those people.

It might also be important to take note that many of the benefits people experience from using skin care products with sea algae do not happen immediately. Instead, such benefits appear gradually after prolonged and consistent use of sea algae skin care products.

In other words, sea algae skin care products should be included as part of a daily regimen. We feel confident your private label customers will see results as long as they stick with it, and your private label skin care line will definitely benefit from repeat business. It’s a win/win for everyone, which is exactly what we strive for at Genie Supply.

La Mer’s “Creme de la Mer” famously uses sea algae extract as the #1 ingredient.. and costs $345 per jar.

La Mer’s “Creme de la Mer” famously uses sea algae extract as the #1 ingredient.. and costs $345 per jar.

BUT ISN’T SEA ALGAE SKINCARE EXPENSIVE?

It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. Just because La Mer famously uses sea algae extract as its first ingredient doesn’t meant that every sea algae product has to cost $300 a jar.

At Genie Supply, we believe that everyone deserves good skin care, which is why we offer two amazing skin care products with sea algae that come with zero “sticker shock.”
