All the Buzz about Beeswax (Including Synthetic)
Hey, honeybee! Today we’re talking about a very important (and very bee-utiful) ingredient that you should learn about: beeswax. You’ve probably heard or seen Burt’s Bees and their famous beeswax products list. If you haven’t, no big deal! We’ll be going into a deep dive on not only beeswax but synthetic beeswax (to give you options) and how you can benefit.
Beeswax 101:
Beeswax is exactly what you’d think it is: wax that comes from bees. The term and definition for beeswax is pretty straightforward. Beeswax is also a humectant (aka your skin will retain moisture better) which is why beeswax can be so popular. Traditionally, beeswax has been used in medicine as a way to heal burns and other wounds. However, beeswax can also be used to help with skin problems (like psoriasis and eczema) or to simply hydrate your skin.
TBH, there’s honestly not much you CAN’T do with beeswax. Several beauty products contain beeswax safely thanks to the EWG (Environmental Working Group). You can even DIY some beauty products with beeswax. Beeswax can be used on your face to treat acne, your body for hydration, or even your hair to add shine! It also acts as a thickener for products such as mascara.
A Word of Warning
Make sure you test for allergies before slathering beeswax all over and make sure you wash it off afterward. Beeswax is a thick and heavy substance, and you need to make sure the skin is given time to breathe. Beeswax also doesn’t dissolve in water, so you may have to use a special cleanser that’s oil-based or something similar to fully remove it.
Synthetic Beeswax 101:
Though we’ve talked about your regular everyday beeswax, now it’s time to discuss synthetic beeswax. If you’re looking for something vegan, try synthetic beeswax! It’s malleable like regular beeswax, but vegan which means it’s inclusive and protective. The recipes for synthetic beeswax vary from place to place, but it’s typically made by “blending a mixture of fatty acid esters, fatty acids, and alcohols together.”
Regardless of whether you choose beeswax or synthetic beeswax, always do a skin patch test. You never know if you’ll have an allergic reaction or just plain irritation!
Just a heads up, many companies use synthetic beeswax, but that doesn’t automatically make it vegan. Make sure you look at the complete ingredient list to find out for sure if a product is vegan or not. At Genie Supply, synthetic beeswax = vegan!
