How to Get Products Dermatologist Tested

Cosmetic Testing

So you have a cosmetic product ready for market, and want it tested by a dermatologist, or maybe you just want to know what dermatology testing for cosmetics entails. Testing is an important part of launching a beauty brand! Testing your product for a variety of effects and characteristics can boost your brand and protect against potential risks.

Top Reasons To Test:

The Most Important Cosmetic Tests:

Before performing dermatologist approved testing there a few tests that need to be performed first.

Stability Testing:

All cosmetic products sold on the market should be stability tested. This test ensures your product keeps its original form over time despite external factors such as heat exposure. This is an important test because it ensures your product will stay in its original form after being sent to your customers, and is safe to be used over time.

This test will also provide you with a shelf life for your product, and all cosmetic products sold on the US Market must indicate a shelf life.

Preservative Efficacy Testing (PET):

This test is only used for cosmetic formulations containing water, and we recommend that ALL formulations containing water complete this testing. Mold and other bacteria love water. (Don’t we all??) Water based formulations are at a much higher risk for mold and bacteria growth, so it is important to ensure that the preservative used in your formulation is doing its job at keeping mold and bacteria away.

OKay…the disclaimer is over

Once you have performed the most important testing relating to your product there are a variety of other tests you can perform on your products to boost your brand and make other valid claims, including testing your product to become dermatologist approved.

Today we are talking about how to get your product dermatologist tested, and Genie Supply can help!

What is dermatologist testing for beauty products?

When a product is certified as “dermatologist tested” this means that a doctor has reviewed product testing results and approved the product as safe to use. The actual testing, however, is performed by a third party.

To be approved by a dermatologist a product must first be tested using a Human Repeat Insult Patch Test (HRIPT). This is when a product is applied in patches to a variety of skin types multiple times. The application site is then observed for any irritation or adverse effects caused by the product.

  • Most HRIPT tests are performed on a variety of skin types, but if you want to test your product on a particular group of people, such as those with sensitive skin, this can also be done, but there may be an additional charge for specialized testing.

After a HRIPT test has been completed and passed by a lab, the results are then sent to a doctor for review. After reviewing the test results, the doctor will most likely approve the product.

After doctor approval the product has officially been dermatologist tested, and you can market it that way!

How to Get Products Dermatologist Tested:

To get your product dermatologist tested you need to work with a cosmetic lab or other testing facility to obtain the results of the HRIPT test and have them approved by a doctor. If you use a testing facility, you may just get the results for your HRIPT test and will have to find a certified doctor to approve it yourself. If you work with an experienced cosmetic lab (cough…Genie Supply) the process will be handled from start to finish and at the end you will be the proud owner of dermatologist tested certification!
