Ever gotten ready for a huge event (date, speech, party) and noticed an even huger zit forming on your face? Yeah, me too. No one’s a fan of acne-filled skin, least of all Genie Supply. Today we’re going to do a brief walkthrough of acne (like the traditional ways to treat acne) and some alternative ways to treat acne you may not have considered.
Acne Types & Treatments
We don’t want to settle here too long, but you should know that there are several types of acne (yay). From whiteheads to blackheads to cysts to your good old-fashioned pimple, there are different ways to treat acne. Sometimes it’s a matter of perfecting a skincare routine and sometimes it’s about what you eat.
Acne After-effects
Even if you do manage to treat that stubborn zit, you might have to deal with the post-acne effects. Scarring and hyperpigmentation are a couple of problems. TBH, it doesn’t really matter if you do or don’t pop the pimple. Once your skin is inflamed from acne, your keratin structure could be messed up and you can still end up with some scarring.
But just in case, you should probably try to not pop the pimple as it can increase the risk of bacteria. My recommendation? Wet a cloth with hot water and press it over the spot until the cloth cools. Repeat however many times you want.
Traditional Acne Treatments
Typically if you’re looking for acne treatment, you’ll look for ingredients such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, or sulfur. These traditional acne treatments are over-the-counter (OTC) nonprescription drugs and they do work.
There’s a reason why you see those names appearing over and over again. However, there are some drawbacks to using these acne treatments.
Adapalene and benzoyl peroxide are known to have bleaching properties with everything they come in contact with, including your skin, sheets, and clothes. Salicylic acid, on the other hand, can burn your skin (ouch) while sulur can induce dryness. Sulfur is also just plain smelly which isn’t good for anyone.
New Acne Treatment on the Horizon: CBD
Currently, there are research and FDA trials going on surrounding the use of CBD to treat acne. Angry, inflamed skin is difficult to deal with, but CBD products are known to reduce inflammation (it’s their greatest strength). Using CBD isolate in 1-5% concentrated oil in creams can do wonders for the skin. Once the CBD deflates the angry skin, you’ve won half the acne battle!

Alternative Acne Combatants

AHA & Retinoids
So if BHA is beta, then AHA is an alpha hydroxy acid. Our Unicorn Serum uses AHA and HA (hyaluronic acid). While BHA oils are oil-soluble, HA is water-soluble. Though it’s not typically used as an acne treatment, we use it as if it was a retinoid (another OTC drug).
This acne product will break apart bad skin cells or keratin blocking pores and help resurface the skin. Basically think of it as rebinding the glue that binds the skin together.
Resolving Acne’s After-Effects
Scarring and hyperpigmentation can be some of the results from a breakout. However, you also need to focus on regenerating the collagen in your skin. Collagen is what keeps your skin looking fresh and young.
