The Scoop on Clean Hair Manufacturers

It’s no secret that the world is becoming more aware of the products and ingredients they’re putting on their body. We love to see people becoming more active and aware as more and more people continue on working to rid their products of harmful ingredients (like parabens) and moving to clean beauty products.

That brings us to clean hair products and clean hair manufacturers. It may sound easy to find any other clean hair manufacturer that claims to be sulfate-free, for example. I’m here to tell you that that’s not enough.

Finding a clean hair manufacturer that has a clean ingredient list is one thing and then finding one that has ethical standings for clean hair is another. Today I’m going to be discussing clean hair manufacturers and problems they may face. Then, I’ll list a few amazing clean hair manufacturers that you should check out!

Why look for Clean Hair Manufacturers

Because so many people grow hair out of their head, they forget that the scalp is skin and we should treat it as such. If you wash your face too often, your skin will overcompensate and increase oil production which can lead to acne. The same thing goes for your hair (sort of). Wash your hair too often, and you get a high chance of getting greasy roots. Your scalp is part of your skin and it deserves all the love and attention you give to your face.

Clean Hair Care Challenges

Ingredients

If a manufacturer truly wishes to be a clean hair manufacturer, they were probably on a difficult journey. There are ingredients used in hair care products that are difficult to work without. Such ingredients include silicones and sulfates. Silicones, for example, make formulating hair care products super easy.

They provide a sleek feel that will glide through your roots and provide a barrier for your hair to grow to its luscious full potential. The downside to silicones? Some of them are bad for you because they don’t break down which leads to buildup which means greasy greasy hair. Creating a formulation without silicones, however, is super difficult.

Sulfates are another big ingredient that everyone is trying to ban. Sulfates (like silicones) can be good for hair as they can strip dirt, oil, and other impurities in the shower. However, sulfates can strip too much which will leave you with dry, brittle hair in no time. They’re also not ideal for people who dye their hair as sulfates can strip away any beautiful color.

Looking for Clean Hair Manufacturers

When looking for clean hair manufacturers, it’s hard to know if the manufacturer is actually silicone-free, sulfate-free, etc. The brand could just claim they’re sulfate-free because they don’t use any of the bad sulfates. L’Oreal, for example, claims they are sulfate-free which would technically make them part of the clean hair manufacturer party.

However, their ingredient list for the Repair & Defend Shampoo contains sulfoacetate. Now technically, sulfoacetate isn’t a bad sulfate and it doesn’t damage your hair like other sulfates. However, this product is just an example of how easy it is for “clean” hair manufacturers to bend their words and hide their ingredient lists from people not well-versed in chemistry.

Briogeo

Nancy Twine is the founder of this clean hair manufacturer and found her passion in clean hair care when she was five years old. Briogeo claims to be a “6-free hair care” as their clean hair products don’t contain harsh sulfates, silicones, parabens, phthalates, DEA and synthetic color.

Briogeo also includes the exact percentage of their naturally-derived ingredients on the backs of their products.  Their clean hair formulas are also cruelty-free, gluten-free, and mostly vegan. This clean hair manufacturer tries to work with all types of hair and can help you create a routine that will either volumize, repair, defrizz, or nurture your hair.

Innersense

This clean hair manufacturer was founded by Joanne and Greg back in 2005. Both worked as stylists for a long period of time and made clean beauty a commitment for their brand. While Greg works on the chemistry part (formulations and whatnot), Joanne focuses on the relationships and creative aspect of the business in getting the message of clean hair care out into the world.

Innersense doesn’t use parabens, silicones, sulfates, or synthetic ingredients. Their site also says they don’t use “questionable ingredients,” but there’s not much information on what that entails.

Nuele Hair

Two women, Anne Cheatham and Dr. Christine Martey-Ochola founded this clean hair care company with the goal of allowing women to have access to healthy hair using all the right ingredients. Female-founded, this clean hair manufacturer also works with female farmers in Ghana and Morocco to boost local economies and bring positive change to women everywhere.

As for clean standards, Nuele claims 100% natural and organic products, no synthetic fragrances, colors, or dyes, alcohols, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and a bunch more. Their site is super transparent and gives extensive information about general clean hair standards in the cosmetics market before giving out their Ultra Clean Hair Standard.
