1. Silgreen G - A Clean Silicone-Alternative For Shampoos

Silicones can cause a build up of product on the hair and ultimately lead to breakage. Thankfully, there are cleaner alternatives on the market.

Silgreen G is a new plant-based silicone alternative. It’s particularly effective in cleansing shampoo products. This light-feel emollient ingredient is composed of a combination of polyglyceryl-4 oleate, glyceryl oleate, and hydrogenated rapeseed alcohol.

  • Polyglyceryl-4 oleate is an emulsifier.

  • Glyceryl oleate is a mix of glycerin with oleic acid and performs well as an emulsifier and stabilizer. As outlined by INCI Decoder, glyceryl oleate is commonly used to thicken cleansing products and has skin-smoothing effects.

  • Hydrogenated rapeseed alcohol works as an emollient. It is effective at controlling the viscosity of a product and conditioning the hair.

2. Hemisqualane - Conditioning Ingredient For Shine & Softness

Silicones aren’t just an issue in shampoo products - we also need clean alternatives to the traditional silicones found in hair conditioners and oils.

Hemisqualane, also known as C13-15 Alkane, is a dry biodegradable emollient ingredient used in conditioning and serum hair products to add shine and softness to the hair.

It’s most commonly used as a more sustainable and clean, naturally-derived alternative to cyclomethicone (and other silicones). Typically made through fermentation of sugarcane or olives, this ingredient is similar to squalane but with a lighter feel.

Hemisqualane combines well with all types of oils and glides nicely along the skin or hair. There’s no trade-off between cleanness and effectiveness here - a 2022 study revealed that hemisqualane is just as effective as silicones in beauty products.

3. Brassica Copolymer - Heat Protectant Properties

Looking to add a heat-protecting product to your hair care range? Brassica copolymer is a plant-based heat-protecting ingredient for hair that works well in heat-protectant sprays.

Scientifically known as ‘Brassica Campestris / Aleurites Fordi Oil Copolymer’, this ingredient is derived from a combination of canola oil and tung oil (extracted from the Chinese wood tree).

Brassica copolymer has several cosmetic benefits including conditioning and film-forming effects for hair protection. The rapeseed/canola oil provides conditioning benefits.

In addition to its hair benefits, this ingredient is known for its skin film-coating effects which can help protect the skin against damage from pollution. A 2022 study reports evidence that brassica copolymer provides a 32% improvement in skin protection against certain air pollutants.

4. BTMS-50 - Smoothing & Conditioning Benefits

BTMS-50 is a cationic surfactant that is naturally smoothing for the hair and works well in conditioning hair products.

As explained by Simply Ingredients, BTMS-50 is a multitasking haircare ingredient that is particularly effective on wet hair. It improves the feel of the hair while wet, making it easier to comb through and detangle after washing, while also reducing frizz.

Derived from rapeseed oil and palm oil, this ingredient typically contains a 50/50 ratio of behentrimonium methosulfate and cetearyl alcohol.

As noted by INCI Decoder, the two ingredients combine particularly effectively to create a stable and easy-to-work-with emulsifier. This improves the spreadability and feel of the haircare product for customers.

  • Cetearyl alcohol has a low irritancy and comedogenicity rating on INCI Decoder. It is made from a combination of cetyl and stearyl alcohol, which are emollient fatty alcohols. Although this ingredient is a form of alcohol, it does not have the same drying and irritating side effects that you will find in other alcohols, making it a more suitable product for both the hair and scalp.

  • Behentrimonium methosulfate adds anti-static and conditioning properties.

5. Jojoba Oil - Moisturizing Ingredient For Private Label Hair Products

Moisturizing ingredients are important to combat dryness and should be a staple in any private label hair products range

Genie Supply’s private label hair and beard oils contain jojoba oil (simmondsia chinensis seed oil). This emollient, hair conditioning ingredient ranks at a 0 for irritancy and 0-2 for comedogenicity on the INCI Decoder 0-5 scale.

A 2013 review of jojoba oil research highlighted its hair and skin moisturizing benefits, with additional potential hair straightening and UV protection properties. With a strong B rating on EWG’s ranking system, jojoba oil is not a concern to the environment or human health.
