The New Era of Transparent Lab Partnerships

In the 21st century everyone is looking for transparency in their relationships, including business relationships. Gone are the days of not knowing where your product is manufactured or what ingredients are used to manufacture it. Transparency with your consumers begins with transparency from your laboratory.

With a wide variety of options in the marketplace today, there is no reason for you to settle on a cosmetic laboratory that is not transparent.

Transparency can mean a variety of things to different people. Whether you are looking for transparency in manufacturing processes, ingredient and labor sourcing, or manufacturing timelines, (or all 3!) it is important to find a beauty lab that is meets your needs and expectations of transparency.

Today we will discuss how to identify transparency with your lab, and how to find a transparent skin care laboratory that fits your expectations.

What Does Transparency Look Like?

Knowing your Ingredients:

Transparency in formulation and manufacturing can look like knowing all of the ingredients in your cosmetic formulation and the purpose they serve within your formulation. When it comes to clean and transparent beauty, each and every ingredient should serve a useful purpose. A transparent lab will help to explain what functions the ingredients in your formulation perform.

Even better: Knowing the ingredients of your formulation and their function help convey transparency with your consumers.

Knowing where the ingredients and labor used to make your product are sourced from:

Transparency from your cosmetic lab can also looking like knowing where the ingredients and labor in your product are sourced from. Usually cosmetic labs don’t communicate this information right away, but you can always ask. When beginning the relationship with you transparent cosmetic lab, you can ask if the labor and ingredients are ethically sourced.

Questions to consider:

  • What is the average wage of the lab’s employees?

  • Where do they source most of their ingredients from?

If a cosmetic lab is willing to disclose this information, it is a good sign of transparency. Once again, this can help your business by being able to confidently tell your consumers that your product is ethically sourced.

Transparent Timelines:

Example private labeling timeline

Another type of transparency you may be looking for in a cosmetic lab is transparency regarding timelines and add-on costs. At Genie Supply we have published timelines for all of our services including:

These timelines range from 1 month to 1 year, and they can be narrowed down with a better understanding of your project. When you begin a relationship with a lab, be sure they offer you clear timelines regarding the completion of your project as well as the progress of your project along the way.

Cosmetic laboratories that do not offer clean timelines and do not provide updates on the progress of your project may not be fully transparent with you as their client.

Remember: There can always be setback’s, and COVID-19 exemplified the challenges many manufacturing companies face when it comes to sourcing good necessary for the production of cosmetics.

The most important thing to look for in your cosmetic lab when looking for transparency is clear and open communication.

Finding a Transparent beauty Lab:

Now that you know what transparency from a beauty and cosmetic lab looks like, it is time to start searching for one!

On your search keep in mind that all cosmetic laboratories are under a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) of some sorts, so they may not be able to tell you EVERYTHING.

Oftentimes a laboratory will not be able to disclose the businesses they have worked with in the past. This can damage the reputation of the brands, after-all you probably would not want your cosmetic laboratory telling everyone they made your formula, right?

When it comes to finding a transparent beauty lab to create your beauty product, the best way to discover if they are transparent is to ASK QUESTIONS. Lots of them!

Asking questions will help you discover if they truly fit the transparent description.

Most importantly, listen to your instincts. They are usually right. If you get a bad feeling from a cosmetic lab, they probably are not be the right fit for your and cosmetic line.
