We Love Lipgloss!

What does every woman from 14 to 64 usually have in her purse, glovebox, or desk drawer? You guessed it – lip gloss. After all, it’s perfect for every occasion. Whether she is going on a power walk, logging into a zoom meeting, or even attending a formal affair, lip gloss adds confidence to anyone’s day.

But how do you start your own lip gloss line?

If you’ve followed our blog before, you may already know some of the basics: create a logo, determine your budget, choose a tube, colors, and finish (glossy or matte?), and decide on a box design. Want a refresher? Head over to “Updated: the Custom Lipgloss Line” or “Updated: How to Create Your Own Lipgloss/ Liquid Lipstick Line in 7 Easy Steps.

Today, let’s reach beyond the basics of starting a lip gloss line

Here are 4 more easy steps you can take to start your own lip gloss line.

(Have questions? Contact us! Genie Supply is always here to help get you started.)

Step 1: Find a Manufacturer

Using a private labeling manufacturer is a great way to start any new cosmetic brand, because it saves you the hassle and cost of creating and producing your own product, while at the same time giving you the freedom to focus on building your brand. But there are still a few things you need to consider.

  • International or Domestic? Do you want to use an international or domestic manufacturer? Examples of international choices include AliExpress and Alibaba, and some of the domestic options consist of YourNamePro, Pinnacle, Aurora Cosmetics, and – of course – us!

  • Budget Range: What is your budget? You’ll quickly find that – here at Genie Supply – we offer lip gloss packages for almost every economic situation. You can even start out as low as 500 pieces in a choice of 2 colors, or 3 colors if you bump up to 600 pieces, for a starting price of approximately $3000. Move up to the $4500 - $5000 range and get 1000+ pieces with all the bells and whistles of a major beauty brand.

At first glance, the per-unit price may seem expensive, but that will go down substantially as you cultivate your brand.

Consider this:

once you have grown enough to buy 10,000 pieces, you will only be paying ~$1.50 per unit. We just want to see you hit the ground running now, but we will also be here for you in the long-haul. From start to finish, Genie Supply wants to make your lipgloss line profitable and sustainable.

Be sure to also take a look at our cool new Cosmetics Lab Checklist for more information on how to pick the perfect manufacturer for your lipgloss line and brand.

Step 2: Determine Your Target Audience

One of the most important measures you can take when starting your own lipgloss line is to figure out exactly who you are going to market to. This will impact how much you charge and how you sell your product.

The best way to do this is to use your own imagination. Picture your ideal customers. Narrow it down to just a few specific individuals, and ask yourself the following questions:

TargetAudience2.jpg
  • What do they look like?

  • How much do they earn? / What’s their job?

  • What’s their age?

  • Where do they live?

  • Where do they spend their time (especially online)?

  • What are their dreams, desires, and wishes?

Step 3: Create a Pricing Strategy

Based on your target audience, you can now think about pricing. A 14-year-old with a paper route and a small allowance is never going to spend $25 on a lipgloss, but a high-powered executive in her 50s probably will.

This is not to say that there’s anything wrong with marketing towards a teenage demographic. But, if that’s your audience, consider going with a lower priced lipgloss line – perhaps charging $12 per unit. After all, if you market your lipgloss line to the wrong crowd you will only be wasting your time and your money.

Step 4: Select Your Marketing Channels

Where do you want to sell your lipgloss line? You could do this on your own website or on partner websites. Either way, your target audience will once again decide this for you. That 14-year-old with the paper route likely spends a lot of time on social media sites, but the 50-year-old executive probably does not.

There are tons of options to choose from. From Instagram to Wholefoods and all the way up to Nordstrom’s, your choices are endless. Just remember that your profit depends on knowing your customer.
